Southeast Metropolitan Park

Purchased in 1998 and opened in 1999, Southeast Metropolitan Park is in southeastern Travis County.  It features athletic fields, playgrounds, a 2-mile-long concrete multi-use trail and a 3-mile primitive hiking trail which meanders its way through forested steep hills and valleys. The trail skirts two ponds and Onion Creek, providing opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing, and bird watching.

Archeological evaluation completed prior to the park’s opening revealed that the site was occupied in the late Prehistoric period, from approximately A.D. 1235-1425. Research into the parkland’s more recent history revealed the existence of several 19th century cemeteries in the area, and that a late 19th century school, Devotion School, once existed on or near the land.
